Ronnie Aldrich & the Squadronaires were one of the most popular and accomplished dance bands in Britain – but in early 1955, in a wildly ambitious move, they announced a transition to rhythm & blues. There were almost a decade ahead of public taste. When the time was right, Pete, the son of saxophonist Cyril Townshend (in the centre of the picture) was in the vanguard of the new movement.
