Always ahead of trends, jazzman Chris Barber was not only an enterprising trombonist and bandleader, but an educator too. In October 1958, he arranged for American rhythm & blues pioneer Muddy Waters to come to Britain, to play support spots on a series of Barber concerts and, hopefully, to promote his music and get some publicity for his records – only a handful of which had been released in the UK. Here we see Muddy at Leeds, playing guitar curlicues behind the Barber Band’s vocalist Ottilie Patterson.
