During the first few weeks of 1956, every kid in the English speaking world learned about Davy Crockett – either from the colossally popular Walt Disney movie or its theme song, which was released in countless versions, including those by such unlikely buckskinned buccaneers as Billy Cotton and Max Bygraves. The hero of the Alamo also started a gold rush among pioneering pop-culture merchandisers, who made a fortune flogging Davy Crockett hats. It was all a passing fad, of course – as was rock ‘n’ roll, so its detractors hoped and prayed.
